NEWELL posted by Darrel Newell on Thursday, July 24, 1997

I am attempting to locate the father of Layton NEWELL, born about 1774 'in Rhode Island'. He moved to Tioga County New York in 1801. As I have gathered from Linda Mathew, the Newell name is not very common in Rhode Island and they seemed to be around the towns of Smithfield and Cumberland. Perhaps the 1790 census might mention some Newells from this area. I realize the census didn't name children, etc but perhaps it might give me some Newell names to search. I have looked into the Thomas Newell of Framingham, CT line and he is not part of that lineage, so have eliminated some. I thank you very much for any help you can give me.
