MATHEWSON / ROSS query: I am searching for information about Joshua & Mary (ROSS) MATHEWSON. What I know so far is that Joshua resided at Gloucester, Providence County, Rhode Island and is thus listed there in the 1790 census for Rhode Island. He is also the only Joshua MATHEWSON in all of Rhode Island at this time. According to the census he has in 1790 (3) sons under the age of 16 meaning they were born 1774-1790. He also has (4) daughters, one of which was Susannah H. MATHEWSON born October 30, 1785. What I am searching for is the names of Joshua's parents and the parents of his wife Mary ROSS. Finally, it sounds like both the surnames MATHEWSON & ROSS are of Scottish descent. Thank you in advance for any information that can be provided.

I think they owned and operated some kind of candy store in Central Falls or Pawtucket. Michael SULLIVAN is my grand-uncle and I have been unable to find out anything about him after he came to the U.S. Thank you in advance for any information you may have.

I am searching for the great grandmother of my husband. Her name was Katherine SHARRY. She was born about 1882. She had twins out of wedlock at about the age of 16 supposedly in Providence, MA. However, as there is not Providence, MA, someone has suggested that I look in Providence, RI. One of the twins died in infancy, could have been up to age 2, and the child is said to have been a girl. The other twin, a little boy, grew to be my husband's grandfather. His name was George Richard FOLEY. His birth date is listed as 1898 in Worchester, MA. Katherine, by family tradition, was said to have been married twice. One of those marriages could have been to a man named FOLEY but that is not certain. Family tradition says she lived in Boston/Worchester her whole life. She is to have died in Boston, 1944 but I have yet to find that record. She had a brother named Tom who was a policeman in Worchester, and several sisters. Can anyone help me find this woman? She is a bit of a mystery and I assume the reason is the pregnancy out of marriage. No one seems to know anything about her or her husband(s). I would be most grateful. Michele Reese

It has been a while since I have asked this question, but maybe there are some new people out there who may have the answer. I have found the gravesite of my 4th great grand parents in Glocester Rhode Island. The grave is in a very small graveyard on the Hurst property off Jackson Schoolhouse Road west of Chepachet. The gravestone reads "Obadiah SMITH died March 13, 1843 aged 77 years and LYDIA his wife died June 10, 1841 aged 71 years. From the information on the gravestone, I would assume that Lydia was born about 1770. I have been able to trace Obadiah's ancestry back to Christopher SMITH in Providence in the late 1640s. From "Genealogy of Thomas OLNEY", Obadiah SMITH was born on March 15, 1777 in Smithfield Rhode Island to Jeremiah SMITH and Lavina OLNEY. From deed records at Chepachet Town Hall, Obadiah SMITH purchased the land on which he is now buried from Matthew Barnes in 1803. I would believe that Obadiah SMITH and Lydia were married about 1790. They had twelve children : Betsey SMITH, born about 1790, married Woodbury LACKEY, Cilia SMITH, born 1802, married Smith PECKHAM, Freelove SMITH married Uriah MOWRY, Cyrus SMITH, born 1804, married Sally MASON, Nancy/Hannah SMITH married Daniel WILLIAMS Lyndall SMITH married Sally ( ), Horace SMITH, unmarried Jeremiah SMITH, unmarried John SMITH, unmarried Samuel SMITH, unmarried Barton, born 1796, unmarried an infant died unnamed Daniel WILLIAMS (husband of Nancy/Hannah SMITH) was a Free Will Baptist minister in northwest Rhode Island and northeast Connecticut in the early 1800s. He was also a blacksmith. Cyrus SMITH (husband of Sally MASON) was also a blacksmith, and with Daniel WILLIAMS operated a blacksmith shop in East Killingly Connecticut from about 1820. When ministerial duties became too burdensome, Daniel WILLIAMS turned the blacksmith shop over to Cyrus SMITH. The blacksmith shop was operated by another three generations of SMITH's. The SMITH family farm and cemetery continue to be "active" in East Killlingly Connecticut. Last spring, the New England Historic Genealogical Society did an exhaustive search for information on Lydia ( ) for me, but were unable to come up with anything new. (There was an Obadiah SMITH who marreid Hulda Petteplace in Smithfield in October 1829, but this was NOT my Obadiah.) I am hoping that someone has the "missing nut" in my family tree. Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me in this search. Mike Smith msmith@nasau.cv.net
