BENNETT, CRAGAN, MCEWEN, MCKEON posted by Kendra Snell on Friday, June 18, 1999

Hello! Please forgive me if I am sending this query to the wrong place.... My grandfather, Augustus CRAGAN, dob 1 Dec 1885, 5 Howard St., Providence, RI, was placed in an orphanage at an early age, due to the death of his mother. His parents were Henry CRAGAN and Mary A. MCEWEN (or MCKEON) CRAGAN. Henry was alive, but chose to place at least 3 children in an orphanage (Augustus, Mabel, Henry Jr.). Henry Sr. was alive while my mother was a child, so obviously continued contact. Augustus was never placed for adoption, but one sibling, Mabel, was adopted by the BENNETT family. I have no clue about which orphanage, nor how to go about looking for one operating 1885-1895. Can you give me any leads? I live in Montana, and sure would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Many thanks just for taking the time to read this! Kendra Snell silverk@montanasky.net

DEVRON, DYER posted by Maureen E. Hamel on Sunday, June 20, 1999

I am attempting to locate any information on my grandparents. Grandfather, Michael J. DEVRON, born in Ireland in 1856, died in Providence in 1917, married Bridget DYER who was born in 1863 in Ireland and died in Providence in 1912. I have information on their children but nothing on them such as where/when married, when they immigrated to U.S., etc. Michael only appears once in the 1910 census, but I know for sure that they were both in Rhode Island at least since 1884 when an uncle Henry F. was born. Bridget may have had a brother living in the area who had a son James DYER. James was my father's cousin, he lived in Providence, but never married. I understand that this is not ancient history but if anyone has any hints for this geneology "newbie" they would be greatly appreciated.
