ABORN, DOUVILLE, GASPE, HOPKINS, JONES, PITCHER, WHIPPLE posted by Yann Scavennec on Sunday, February 6, 2000

This message is posted from France - One member of my family settled in Rhode Island in the 18th century and had a great destiny. His name was Pierre DOUVILLE. He was born in St Pierre du Nord in 1765 (Ile St Jean which is now Prince Edward Island). He settled in Providence and married Miss Cynthia ABORN, daughter of the Colonel of the militia ABORN. He joined as Lieutenant the American Continental Navy and traveled with Abraham WHIPPLE, John Paul JONES and Commodore Esek HOPKINS, the first Commander in Chief of the New Continental Fleet. He helped as a pilot the french navy (Destouches) to come to Rhode Island and after the American Revolution became member of the Cincinnati Society of Rhode Island. He died during the French Revolution fighting against the British Navy near Brest the first of June 1794. I think that his portrait is now at Brown University. My query is simple : I would like to collect any information about : -the DOUVILLE's family at that time. As a Cincinnati member, the Society must have documents or information ? - the Continental Navy in Rhode Island especially about the GASPE story. - any information on Jonathan PITCHER one of his companions on board. - any information on Cynthia ABORN and the ABORN's Family. Thank you very much for your help

BOVINO, DILUSTRO, STRIANO posted by Rosemarie on Sunday, February 20, 2000

I'm looking for more information about Catarina DILUSTRO. According to the Rhode Island death records (on ancestry.com), she would have been born about 1874 and died April 8, 1927. She was married to Filippo STRIANO (who according to these same records was born about 1886 and died May 14, 1911). They had at least two children, Rosina (my grandmother - born July 23, 1909) and Raffaele (born March 18, 1911). After Filippo died, Catarina married Rocco BOVINO (March 20, 1913) and they had three children, Rocco (born July 8, 1914), Rosina (born October 21, 1916) and Luciano (born March 31, 1918 and died April 1, 1918). According to these records, Catarina would have been about 35 when she had my grandmother, was she married to someone else before Filippo? Did she have any other children before having Rosina STRIANO? How does she connect with the other DILUSTRO's in the Providence area during this time period?

CARLONE, DILUSTRO, LONARDO, STRIANO posted by Rosemarie on Sunday, February 20, 2000

I'm looking for more information about the STRIANO surname. My great grandfather, Filippo STRIANO (born about 1886 - died May 14, 1911) was married to Catarina DILUSTRO (born about 1874 - died April 8, 1927). His mother and father were Rosina and Raffaele STRIANO. According to Rhode Island death records (on ancestry.com) Rosina would have been born about 1869 and died April 24, 1918), it also showed that Raffaele was already deceased. I found Raffaele (at age 27) listed on a passenger list arriving September 17, 1890 with what I think may be a sister (Chiara, age 13) and a brother (Gaetano, age 30), but found no record of his death or any other record of Chiara or Gaetano. Family stories have said that our STRIANO's didn't arrive to the US until 1905, so I am not entirely sure if this is my Raffaele although the age seems about right. In addition to Filippo, Raffaele and Rosina's children were Annuziata (born March 25, 1902, married Vincenzo CARLONE) and Margherita (married Emilio LONARDO).
