My name is Bob Parsons and I am the Inspecting Officer of the Canadian Agency (Ottawa) of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Its duties are to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth (Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa) who died in the two world wars, to build and maintain memorials to the dead whose graves who are unknown and to keep records and registers. Essentially, the Commission's aim is to ensure that all war graves receive continued and perpetual care. The Canadian Agency of the Commission is responsible for some 19,000 war graves in approximately 3,200 cemeteries throughout North America. Although the vast majority of the graves are well known to us, and are visited on a cyclical basis, there remains several war dead whose burial locations are still unknown to the Commission. One such war dead soldier lived in Saylesville RI. His rank and name are Sapper Joseph Thomas ALCORN. He died at the Montreal General Hospital of pneumonia 1 Oct 1918. Although he was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1876, his residence, when he joined the Canadian Army, was listed as 938 Smithfield Avenue, Saylesville, RI. His next of kin was his wife Mary Elizabeth ALCORN who resided at the same address. His religion was recorded as Presbyterian. Pte ALCORN was 42 when he enlisted in the Army. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. Any assistance you can provide in locating his grave will be greatly appreciated. He is entitled to a Commonwealth War Grave Commission headstone, therefore, we would like to locate his burial site. Thank you Bob Parsons Commonwealth War Graves Commission Tel - 613-992-3224
