BEDFORD, HAMILTON, HARRIS, MACDONALD, STEADMAN, WOODCOCK posted by Ben MacDonald on Saturday, January 17, 2004

About 1884, Alexander G MACDONALD and his 2nd wife Eunice STEADMAN relocated from New Glasgow, NS to Providence. Alexander's 1st wife, Lavinia HARRIS, died of TB in 1876 and was buried in Kings Co, NS (Grafton) There were 7 children - Annie Sarah, Jerusha M, John Chalmers, Charles Harris, William Sommerville, Hughena May, and Benjamin Clifford. Alexander died on 4 Aug 1886 and his body was returned to Pictou County (Bridgeville) for burial. The children all appear to have remained in Providence. Annie Sarah m. William M HAMILTON in Providence in 1896 and died in Sept 1914. She was buried at Plymouth. A 1920 census shows Charles living in Bristol with wife Mary. He was a carpenter in a Bristol shipyard. They had 5 children - Mildred, Lavinia, Marguerite, George, and Charles. Mildred and Lavinia never married and died in St Pete, FL. Marguerite married and ran an antiques shop in Lakeport NH. She also died in FL. Eunice remarried in 1895 to a Jonathan WOODCOCK and had another son Ernest. The 1900 census show Mother Eunice living at 48 Stewart St along with her daughter Hughena and sons William and Benjamin. She was a widow again. I have checked various census data and have found most of my grandfather’s brothers and sisters remained in the Providence/Bristol area. In 1900, at age 18, my grandfather Benjamin was listed as a ‘milk float driver’ (milkman) in the census. It does appear that many of the men, at least in my MacDonald line, were carpenters and cabinetmakers. When daughter Hughena married John BEDFORD in Providence in 1902, Eunice, Benjamin, Hughena and her family relocated to Philadelphia and most contact has now been lost with these other family members I remember seeing an old photo in my youth of a horse drawn parade in Brockton MA with the note on saying 'some of our MacDonald's indicating someone had moved to that area, possibly Annie as Brockton is near to Plymouth. I would be very interested in locating any members and descendents of this family for genealogy purposes. Regards
