SHIPPEE, SMITH posted by Fred Shippee on Saturday, June 10, 2006

SMITH, Elizabeth and Hannah. These two, probably sisters, married SHIPPEE brothers, Royal and Thomas, respectively, and appear to have lived near the Foster/Killingly border in the early to late 1800s. I'm seeking any info on the parentage of these two SMITH's.

Good Evening to all you RI USGenWebbers-- I am contacting you not with a query but with a point of information. Providence College held a large body of pre-20th century RI court records "In Trust" from 1978 until 1989, when they were returned to state hands. The Collection was incorporated into the State's central repository for judicial records, currently maintained at the Rhode Island Supreme Court Judicial Records Center, 5 Hill Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860. The URL is http://www.courts.state.ri.us/records/defaultrecords.htm The Providence College Archives and Special Collections department still occasionally receives inquiries about the Collection. I hope this reminder will point new researchers towards the appropriate site. Regards.

BARTLETT, PASSMORE posted by Robert Merchant on Saturday, August 12, 2006

Constock PASSMORE & Otis BARTLETT I have an old U.S. Large Cent coin, dated 1816, that has been counterstamped with two punches that read "PASSMORE / SMITHFIELD". The only early American craftman with this name and city pairing that I have been able to find is Comstock Passmore of Smithfield, Rhode Island. He is mentioned in several antique tool directories, and he is also mentioned in the book "History of the State of Rhode Island with Illustrations", on pages 184-186, which is also transcribed on this web site. Passmore made scythes at a factory in Smithfield from about 1805-1825, along with several men from the BARTLETT family, including Otis BARTLETT and Elisha BARTLETT. I have another old (date worn) U.S. Large Cent in my collection that is stamped "O. BARTLETT". This coin may have been stamped by Otis BARTLETT. Many early American craftsmen and merchants stamped coins, for various purposes. I am trying to find additional information about Passmore and Bartlett. Of Special Interest would be any type of item that has these same marks on them, such as an old tool or an old scythe that they made. I would like to take photographs of the items that they stamped, and then write an article about them. Does anyone know of a historical museum or other collector that may have an item that was marked by Comstock PASSMORE or Otis BARTLETT? Also, are there any antique dealers in the Smithfield area that may be of help? If so, then I would appreciate receiving their contact information. Thank you for your help! Bob Merchant

KING posted by Valerie King on Thursday, September 28, 2006

I am searching for Orin KING, I found a listing in the cemetery data base for him. that's the good news. The bad new is, according to the database the JN007 is coded for a place called Cedar Lot in Johnston Rhode Island. I cannot find any kind of listing for this cemetery either on map quest or even the phone book. I am only a state away and would like to visit and maybe finally find my mystery man. But now his resting place is also a mystery. Does anyone know of this cemetery? I tried using the direction they gave, but still no luck. the direction say George Waterman at Vacca Street 20ft. E of tel pole 0672. (Help)
